This year the number of rounds is likely to increase as there are more applications compared to last year,” the official added. “Last year there were five rounds of lottery to allot the seats. “In cases where the number of applications is less than the seats for a particular school there would be no need to have a lottery and the seats would be allotted to the applicants. NASHIK: Nashik has emerged fourth across the state in terms of number of applications received for admissions of children in schools under the Right to Education (RTE) Act.Pune is on top of the list with 53,843 applications followed by Nagpur (26,044), Thane (16,035), Nashik(14,711) and Aurangabad (14,484).This year Nashik zilla parishad received as many as 14,711 applications for admission — over 3,000 more than the last year.Nashik ZP is the nodal agency for admissions under the RTE for the entire district involving 5,735 seats in 457 schools. With over twice the number of application received as compared to the seats available, there would be stiff competition to get admission,” a ZP education department official said. The ZP would resort to lottery system for allotment of seats to the beneficiaries.

Under the RTE Act, private unaided and self-financed schools must reserve 25% of the seats for children from the economically weaker sections of the society. The process of applying online started on March 5 and although the deadline was March 25, the state education department had later extended it to March 30.“There has been overwhelming response from parents belonging to weaker section to get their children admitted in schools under the RTE. With over twice the number of application received as compared to the seats available, there would be stiff competition to get admission,” a ZP education department official said. The ZP would resort to lottery system for allotment of seats to the beneficiaries. “In cases where the number of applications is less than the seats for a particular school there would be no need to have a lottery and the seats would be allotted to the applicants. But in cases where the number applications exceed the number of seats available, we will have to undertake the lottery,” the official said.Preference would be given to applicants in the lottery system whose residences are within a radius of one-km from the school. The state government will specify the date when the lottery process would begin. “Last year there were five rounds of lottery to allot the seats. This year the number of rounds is likely to increase as there are more applications compared to last year,” the official added.
