Stones, bricks landing on roofs triggers panic among slum dwellers, cops clueless

Nashik: Fear looms large over a group of slum dwellers in Shiv Nagar of Anandwali along Gangapur Road, as stones and bricks are being thrown over their houses for the past three days.This slum on the banks of River Godavari is densely populated and most of the residents are manual workers. On Wednesday, at around 4 pm, Ashwini Sasane of Shiv Nagar was taken aback when the roof of her house, which is made of a cement sheet, quivered as a stone fell on it.Sasane ran out of her house and neighbours gathered to figure out who was pelting stones at them. As she came out, more stones came raining down on them ove rnext five or 10 minutes.Sasane said they have not been able to find the culprits. Pieces of brick or tiles, stones, anything that a hand can hold and throw is being flung towards them.Anand Jadhav, a youngster, said, “About 20 of us got on top of the roofs to check. We found no one. We have recorded videos on a cellphones and played them in slow motion, but that too has not been helpful.” Meanwhile, some people have been hit and are now watchful all the time.Jadhav said a complaint was lodged with police on Wednesday night, the first day when the stones were pelted. He said policemen from the Gangapur police station arrived to check, but they too found nothing although they waited around till 2 am.Raju Rokade, whose roof was shattered, said some 15 houses close to the river are being targeted. Women, elderly people and small children are continuously in fear of getting struck by a stone.
