DNA EXCLUSIVE: Another senior citizen becomes victim of fake insurance policy

A 68 year-old woman has registered a complaint at Samta Nagar police station after she was duped of Rs 67.24 lakh by an unknown accused who claimed to be an insurance agent. He cheated her under the pretext of renew her non-functional insurance policy with return benefits. According to the police, the victim is a retired professional and is a resident of Kandivali east. In 2013, she had taken an insurance policy from Birla Sun Life Insurance worth Rs 30,000 but later it lapsed due to non-payment. Last year, the victim got a call from accused Rohit Deshmukh. He told her that if she does not renew the taken policy then she will not get the amount and if she wants to continue, she will have to pay Rs 60,000 to him. "The victim paid the money via NEFT transaction. She made an additional payment of Rs 10 lakh as demanded by Deshmukh to keep the policy running. Deshmukh frequently demanded more money from her," said a police officer requesting anonymity. The victim realised the con when she got a call from a policeman from CBD Belapur police station who informed her that the cops have busted a gang who operated a fake call centre and duped people across Maharashtra claiming that they would help avail bank loans and insurance policies. "Eight people have been arrested. The accused conned people Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Nagpur, Pune and Raigad," said a senior officer from Navi Mumbai police. The Samta Nagar police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Con Job This is the second such incident of insurance policy fraud in the city.
