Campus ambassadors, ELCs to create awareness on polling

A training programme for campus ambassadors has already been held.SVEEP committee chairman and Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat CEO R Selvamani said those students, who have been selected as campus ambassadors, will be working for one academic year. “Campus ambassadors have already commenced various activities and they will continue their awareness programmes even after the Lok Sabha election. While ELCs have been opened in 118 first grade colleges and 203 PU colleges, 560 high schools also have such clubs in the district. Campus ambassadors will communicate with their classmates, teachers and staff of the colleges. Similarly, campus ambassadors will also help voters to get identity cards and to check their names in the voters list, and take initiatives to add their names or insert corrections in it.

Mangaluru: Campus ambassadors appointed by the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) committee of Dakshina Kannada have commenced activities to increase the poll percentage in the district.The committee has appointed 80 campus ambassadors in 40 first grade colleges of the district, who will work to increase the voting percentage among young voters. A training programme for campus ambassadors has already been held.SVEEP committee chairman and Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat CEO R Selvamani said those students, who have been selected as campus ambassadors, will be working for one academic year. “Campus ambassadors have already commenced various activities and they will continue their awareness programmes even after the Lok Sabha election. They will hold programmes during National Voters’ Day and conduct various activities to create awareness on the importance of voting right,” Selvamani said.“Students are roped in to create awareness on voting right as their role is significant in any election. Campus ambassadors will communicate with their classmates, teachers and staff of the colleges. They will seek information about the number of voters in their homes and insist that they exercise their franchise without fail. Similarly, campus ambassadors will also help voters to get identity cards and to check their names in the voters list, and take initiatives to add their names or insert corrections in it. They will also coordinate with NCC cadets and NSS volunteers to motivate voters to exercise their franchise compulsorily,” he said.This is in addition to electoral literacy clubs (ELC) set up in PU colleges, first grade colleges, medical colleges and polytechnics to increase the voting percentage. While ELCs have been opened in 118 first grade colleges and 203 PU colleges, 560 high schools also have such clubs in the district.
