LMC starved of funds, but won’t hike tax

Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has decided not to increase the rate of tax or bring any new tax in the budget for 2019-20. LUCKNOW: There will be no additional tax burden on citizens from the municipal corporation this year. However, owners of only around 43% pay house tax. We are focusing on providing more services , that’s why we have decided to increase the budget of development by 20%.” For these, the corporation will ask for government aid.Mayor Sanyukta Bhatia said, “We will not bring any new tax.

LUCKNOW: There will be no additional tax burden on citizens from the municipal corporation this year. Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) has decided not to increase the rate of tax or bring any new tax in the budget for 2019-20. However, the struggling agency will ask for more funds from the state government for development work.A Rs 2,200-crore budget will be placed in LMC’s executive committee meeting on February 20.The main sources of income for the corporation are house tax, water tax and auction of parking lots. Officials said to increase revenue, the focus would be on tax collection.For example, there are 5.48 lakh taxable properties in the city. However, owners of only around 43% pay house tax. As a result, total house tax collection is only around Rs 200 crore against the target of Rs 600 crore.This year, more funds for construction and maintenance of roads, sewer pipes, drains and parks will be allocated. For these, the corporation will ask for government aid.Mayor Sanyukta Bhatia said, “We will not bring any new tax. We are focusing on providing more services , that’s why we have decided to increase the budget of development by 20%.”
