Khalsa founder’s legacy alive at Yahiyaganj

Gurdwara ‘gyani’ Paramjeet Singh said, “Guru Gobind Singh was born in 1666. He sent them to devotees in Lucknow directing them to send a large cannon and some gold to Paonta Sahib. The hukamnamas contain instructions on ‘naam japo’, an order to meditate and chant ‘Waheguru’,” said secretary Manmohan Singh.“Guru Maharaj also wrote a ‘mool mantra’ (hymn) in 1686 specially for devotees of the city. In 1672, his son Guru Gobind Singh visited the place and stayed here for two months and 13 days with his mother, Mata Gujri and uncle Kripal Chand on way from Anandpur Sahib, Punjab, to Patna Sahib. “Five quintals of flowers will be used for decoration,” he added.

LUCKNOW: Guru Gobind Singh , the tenth Sikh guru and the founder of Khalsa is known to the world as the warrior saint, but not many people know that he visited Lucknow and stayed in the city for two months and 13 days.At a time when the city will be celebrating the 352nd birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh ji, TOI takes a peak in the historic gurdwara where the guru stayed and where his ‘hukamnamas’ are still preserved.Gurdwara Yahiyaganj , constructed in the 17th century, bears historical significance as it was constructed in the memory of Guru Teg Bahadur, the ninth Sikh guru, who stayed at the site in Lucknow for three days while travelling from Patna Sahib through Varanasi, Ayodhya and Jaunpur in 1670. In 1672, his son Guru Gobind Singh visited the place and stayed here for two months and 13 days with his mother, Mata Gujri and uncle Kripal Chand on way from Anandpur Sahib, Punjab, to Patna Sahib. Gurdwara ‘gyani’ Paramjeet Singh said, “Guru Gobind Singh was born in 1666. He stayed here while travelling from Anandpur Sahib.”Two ‘hukamnamas’ and a ‘mool mantra’ written by Guru Gobind Sinhgh himself, are housed in the gurdwara.“Guru Maharaj wrote these hukamnamas in 1693 and 1701 during his stay at Paonta Sahib in Himachal Pradesh. He sent them to devotees in Lucknow directing them to send a large cannon and some gold to Paonta Sahib. The hukamnamas contain instructions on ‘naam japo’, an order to meditate and chant ‘Waheguru’,” said secretary Manmohan Singh.“Guru Maharaj also wrote a ‘mool mantra’ (hymn) in 1686 specially for devotees of the city. This mool mantra forms the first page of Sri Guru Granth Sahib kept in this gurdwara,” he added.The 352nd birth anniversary will be a twin celebration this year, coinciding with Lohri.Kirtans and community feasts will be organized with priests from Amritsar and Dehradun coming to conduct rituals. “Five quintals of flowers will be used for decoration,” he added.
