more-in A village tourism development committee comprising landowners, local body members and investors has called upon the Tourism Department to declare Kakkadampoyil, one of the popular eco-tourism spots in Kozhikode district, as a tourism village for its better promotion among domestic and international sightseers. They had also submitted a memorandum to Thiruvambady MLA George M. Thomas recently to take up the project with the government and conduct a proper field study to understand the potential of the region. Inclusion of the place in the State government’s tourism map too was sought by the newly formed committee. Mr. Thomas, who came out in support of the proposal, said efforts would be taken to prepare a master plan under the leadership of a competent agency within a month. “Local landowners have already expressed their willingness to cooperate with the project and hand over the required land for basic development works,” he said. Mr. Thomas also pointed out that the unexplored hill station located nearly 50 km away from the Kozhikode city had several tourism attractions such as view points, waterfalls, trekking paths, farms and natural streams. “The basic infrastructure development of the spot could be taken up by the government. We will also approach the Union government for support,” he added. Koodaranhi grama panchayat authorities said the village was badly in need of better support from the Tourism Department as the settler farmers in the region were going through a severe financial crisis because of the decline in farm production. Unable to find an alternative source of income, hundreds of families have already left the place, they pointed out.
