Kolkata: Behala chemical unit fire sparks panic

A factory wall of the chemical factory had developed cracks and even asbestos roof of an adjoining factory was charred in the flame. KOLKATA: A major fire broke out at a chemical factory which produced paint thinner at Chandiatala Road in Behala on Sunday evening which continued till late night as firemen of 10 fire engines had a harrowing time to control the fire. Tarak Singh, MMIC, KMC said that the fire was reported around 8 pm and it created a major panic and after 10 engines were pressed into action the fire was brought under control after two hours. Initially, there were five fire tenders. The fire spread soon and there was panic in the area as the factory is located in a densely populated area with residential buildings and also a gas godown is located in the vicinity.Some of the adjoining factory workers soon started the fire fighting and they were more cocnerned with the fire leaping up in height as the chemical factory has boundary walls with other factories.

There was panic among the local residents as well and all gathered to help in controlling the flames.DG (fire service) Jag Mohan said that they were able to check the fire from spreading to adjoining complex and the fire men were trying their best to cool the adjoining walls by sprinkling water, so that the fire can be controlled from spreading. He said that as there are some ponds in the locality water source helped the firemen.However, the local residents were at the spot around the fire to see that the fire was controlled, as often theer were blasts inside the factory as the containers of thinner exploded in high temperature with a great sound. Tarak Singh, MMIC, KMC said that the fire was reported around 8 pm and it created a major panic and after 10 engines were pressed into action the fire was brought under control after two hours.
