KOLKATA: A 74-year-old retired professor of Jogamaya Devi College in south Kolkata was allegedly stabbed to death by his son after a heated discussion on Wednesday night.Police said Sunit Kumar Mukherjee had been living with his son Sabyasachi (42) at a Swaraj Park highrise in Rajarhat for the last one month as their ancestral house in Tollygunge was being promoted. Sabyasachi used to teach at a hotel management institute in Garia till a few months ago.Police said they were alerted by the security guard of the building early on Thursday about a commotion in room no. 105, where the father-son duo lived. “The security guard, Gobinda Chakraborty, said he had heard some shouts from the flat around 9pm. He went upstairs to inquire about the commotion, but none responded. Around an hour later, he heard someone crying in the room. He again knocked on the door, but no one responded. Suspecting something to be wrong, he informed the security in-charge and called the police,” a senior officer of Airport police station said.Soon, a police team went to the apartment and knocked on the door. After none responded, the cops threatened to break open the door. Only then did Sabyasachi open the door. “Sabyasachi smelt of liquor, but looked calm and composed. On being asked about his father, he pointed towards the drawing room where we found Sunit lying in a pool of blood. He had been stabbed and a blood-stained kitchen knife was lying by the body,” said the officer.Cops took Sunit to a private hospital on VIP Road where he was declared dead on arrival. Sabyasachi was arrested on charges of murder and the knife was seized. He was produced before a Barrackpore court and was remanded to seven days’ police custody.Police said the father-son duo used to fight a lot – even over the TV remote. Sabyasachi was a divorcee. “The father was a vegetarian and the son loved chicken. Sunit was opposed to Sabyasachi’s addiction to alcohol,” he said.The officer added that Sabyasachi had lost his job a few months ago and was currently unemployed.“He often used to ask his father for money and had possibly done so on Wednesday when a quarrel broke out between the two. Sabyasachi probably attacked him in a fit of rage,” the officer said.
