The data shows that students who have failed to qualify even in a single paper is just one percent. “This year, 99% candidates qualified for the second semester.

KOLKATA: The first examination under Calcutta University’s (CU) semester system has seen a dramatic increase in the pass percentage when the results were published on Thursday evening.Almost all those who took the first semester of the BA and BSc exams — as many as 99% — have passed, up from a usual pass rate of around 70% to 72%. Taken by students who had joined in the 2018-’19 session, this is the first time the 162-year-old university is following the semester system.“There is no data available with me right now, but the usual pass percentage is 70% to 72%,” confirmed Dipak Kar, CU’s pro vice-chancellor, academic. Till the previous academic session, the university used to follow a three-part examination pattern. It has been replaced by six semesters.“This year, each student had to take four subjects. The data shows that students who have failed to qualify even in a single paper is just one percent. Of the 99% who have passed, as many as 50% have passed all four papers,” said Kar. Each paper now has three components: internal assessment, tutorials or practicals and theoretical. “The reason for high marks is this component marking,” Kar explained. “This year, we have been able to publish the results of the first semester of BA and BSc honours, general and major within 45 days,” said vice-chancellor Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee. “This year, 99% candidates qualified for the second semester. This proves that students who were earlier at a disadvantage in competitions nationally have now found a level playing field, with the introduction of the semester system.”Even students of the humanities — traditionally a non-scoring field — have scored well this year, according to CU authorities.A total of 80,000 students took the BA and BSc first semester exam.In BSc (honours), 99.8% girls qualified, while 99.3% boys are ready for the second semester. The corresponding figures in BA (honours) are 99.6% and 98.6%.
