Rs 28 lakh seized in Arunachal Pradesh over last two days

ITANAGAR: With the model code of conduct having come into effect, flying squads and police teams in Arunachal Pradesh have seized cash amounting to over 28 lakh over the past two days.Out of the total amount, Rs 15.6 lakh was seized in from various checkpoints at Naharlagun, Itanagar and Nirjuli. He informed that a meeting to discuss matters related to income tax surveillance during the elections was convened here on Wednesday. The remaining amount of Rs 10.72 lakh was seized from East Siang district and Rs 1.8 lakh was seized from at Seppa in East Kameng district, police sources said on Thursday.Itanagar SP Tumme Amo informed that police also seized eight rifles/guns, 15 live rounds of ammunitions and 20 local doas in the state capital. "Arunachal has been identified as a 'high expenditure sensitive' state and measures are being put in place to check all such transactions and cash movement," Tayeng disclosed. Helicopters are also being used to monitor movements of cash.

"The seized arms and ammunition were deposited at the police station," Amo said adding, many posters and banners defacing the town and public properties were also removed by police.Arunachal Pradesh chief electoral officer (CEO) Kaling Tayeng has said that steps are being taken to stop candidates from using cash in an illegal manner to lure people to vote for them."Arunachal has been identified as a 'high expenditure sensitive' state and measures are being put in place to check all such transactions and cash movement," Tayeng disclosed. He informed that a meeting to discuss matters related to income tax surveillance during the elections was convened here on Wednesday. The meeting was attended by additional director of income tax (investigation) Mridul Kumar Das, who is also the nodal officer (income tax) for the northeast, IGP Sunil Garg, secretaries, directors, deputy commissioners and SPs.The CEO said the meeting was called to evaluate the sensitive areas so that strategies could be worked out for better manpower management and to share the standard operation procedures prepared by the investigation directorate of the income tax department along with other departments in the field. Tayeng added that Das, during the meeting, informed that if there is any seizure of cash amounting to Rs 10 lakh and above, the income tax team stationed at various locations of the state would be informed immediately.The control room of the income tax has already been activated at the civil secretariat here and income tax officers from Guwahati would also be joining the centre soon. Helicopters are also being used to monitor movements of cash.
