Most gym-goers unaware steroids can harm too

Indore: Around 70% gym-goers, who take nutritional supplements for weight loss, have experienced harmful effects, revealed a study conducted by students of MGM medical college.The students of Community Medicine Department examined the data collected from 100 gym-goers. Instead of this, people can also follow natural nutritional diet for muscle development, suggested the professor. They claimed that supplements can cause behavioural changes and can affect other body parts.During the research it was found that of the total gym-goers, around 30% people take supplements and as they are not aware about it. They consume steroids as suggested by the trainer, claimed Ayush Bhatnagar, a members of the research team.“Steroids help develop muscles faster and people start consuming it on daily basis and it lead to severe side-effects including hair loss, liver, heart, kidney and skin diseases. These supplements also lead to behavioural change like irritability, aggression, depression or suicidal tendencies.”Chirag Sen, another member, said, “We’ve found that gym trainers are not well educated about supplements and as most of them are not certified with nutrition and training course, they mislead consumer which can prove fatal for them.” Majority of the people take supplements for weight gain than weight loss.Another team member Dimple Sahu said that around 89.3% people take supplements orally, while rest 10.7% follow a risky process and take it through injections.Sahu said, it was found that only 17.6% of the sample took consultation from doctor before taking supplement, while rest consumed it without any proper guidance.The department’s assistant professor Dr Priyanka Mahawar said, “It was found that the trend of nutritional supplement has increased in the city as more people have started going to gyms and want to develop muscles in short span of time.”There is a need to make people aware about the harmful effects of steroids that they are consuming for building muscles.
