Guwahati: All India United Democratic Front ( AIUDF ) chief Badruddin Ajmal , seeking re-election for a third time from Dhubri, is one of the richest candidates in the fray in Assam. The perfume baron’s declared income for 2017-18 was 4.29 crore, with assets worth more than Rs 75 crore, a rise of Rs 32 crore since the last election.The 63-year-old businessman-turned political leader has declared that his sources of income are business, bank interest on deposits, remuneration from partnership firm, gains from sale of property, profit from partnership firms and his salary as an MP.Ajmal’s immovable property is worth Rs 60.52 crore in terms of current market value. He has declared movable property worth Rs 15.49 crore, which includes gold worth over Rs 6.40 lakh and various motor vehicles valued at over Rs 1.71 crore. He has also given personal loan worth Rs 8.46 crore.His wife, a housewife, has a declared movable assets of over Rs 60 lakh and immovable property at current market value of Rs 2.16 crore. He is passed Fazil examination (equivalent to MA) 1975 from Darul Uloom Deoband.Ajmal also faces charges in seven cases pending against him — obscene acts, intent to cause riot, promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, false statement on oath or affirmation to public servant in seven cases pending against him.He has six cases registered against him at various police stations across the state and one case pending disposal at a court of judicial magistrate.The last case registered against him was at Dispur police station last December, where he is alleged to have indulged in verbal abuse, foul words and threatened to kill a journalist during an interaction with media at Mankachar in Dhubri district last December.The oldest case against him, which is still under investigation, dates back to 2012. In this case, he is alleged to have made provocative speeches in the BTAD area, instigating Muslims to retaliate against Bodos in the aftermath of the ethnic clashes there then.In another case registered in Pulibor police station in 2015, which is also under investigation, he is alleged to have outraged religious feelings of Hindus by questioning if Prime Minister Narendra Modi had consumed beef while he was in Pakistan.
