I have discussed the matter with the additional chief secretary and instructed a probe into the cases.”Arora said, “There have been several instances of infections after surgeries. Haryana Medical Services Corporation Limited (HMSCL), through which these medicines are procured, has also sent the samples separately for inspection. We believe that if the medicines were contaminated at one place, then there must have been some localised reason behind the same. The chief medical officers (CMOs) concerned have been directed not to use the present lot of medicine. After that, nearly 40 patients had come to PGI, Rohtak , from Bhiwani Jhajjar and Karnal districts in 2-3 phases.

AMBALA: Rajiv Arora, additional chief secretary, health, Haryana, and other officials concerned on Saturday held a meeting with health minister Anil Vij at his residence regarding cases of botched-up cataract surgeries in different parts of the state.Vij said, “I have ordered a probe into recent cases of botched-up cataract surgeries where some patients had developed infection in their eyes post operations. Warehouses where the medicine was kept have been sealed. The chief medical officers (CMOs) concerned have been directed not to use the present lot of medicine. We believe that if the medicines were contaminated at one place, then there must have been some localised reason behind the same. However, this has happened at 3-4 places, therefore, there are possibilities of some centralised reason behind these contaminations. I have discussed the matter with the additional chief secretary and instructed a probe into the cases.”Arora said, “There have been several instances of infections after surgeries. Firstly at a Kurukshetra hospital, 24 patients had faced some problems post-cataract operations and they were referred to PGI, Chandigarh, where their operations were conducted again. Now, they are recovering well and their vision is also fine. After that, nearly 40 patients had come to PGI, Rohtak , from Bhiwani Jhajjar and Karnal districts in 2-3 phases. Of these, the operations of 24 have been conducted again and others are undergoing conservative treatment. We hope that they would also recover soon after the operations.”Asked about action to be taken against those held responsible, Arora said, “We have seized the entire supply of the medicine not only in government hospitals, but also in the private sector. We have also informed the Centre about these incidents. The state drug controllers have collected samples that have been sent for inspection. Haryana Medical Services Corporation Limited (HMSCL), through which these medicines are procured, has also sent the samples separately for inspection. After receiving reports of these samples, we would come to know that which medicine lot was contaminated or had any problem and then action against the supplier company would be taken.”
