2 FIRs filed after Kashmiri students allege assault

AMBALA: Taking cognizance of complaints by Kashmiri students at Mullana village, the district police registered two separate cases against unknowns for allegedly rioting and thrashing Kashmiri students of Maharishi Markandeshwar University (MMU), Mullana on Sunday night.The cases have been registered after two Kashmiri students came forward in front of Ambala superintendent of police and deputy commissioner during their visit to the MMU hostel on Sunday evening. The parents of some of the students were waiting in Chandigarh. After taking leave from the university authorities, nearly 45 students have left the MMU campus for a period of one week in order to meet their parents at home.

AMBALA: Taking cognizance of complaints by Kashmiri students at Mullana village, the district police registered two separate cases against unknowns for allegedly rioting and thrashing Kashmiri students of Maharishi Markandeshwar University (MMU), Mullana on Sunday night.The cases have been registered after two Kashmiri students came forward in front of Ambala superintendent of police and deputy commissioner during their visit to the MMU hostel on Sunday evening. The students, while explaining their concerns to the officials, alleged that they were being victimised by some local groups, who were calling and labeling them as terrorists and they were also thrashed on Saturday night.In the first case, Naresh Kumar, assistant sub-inspector, at Mullana police station, said: “I received a video on my WhatsApp in which two boys were present in their room and some persons entered the room and started asking the boys about when would they leave the place and that they had only an hour’s time to vacate. The unknown persons are also seen abusing and thrashing the boys with shoes in the video.”A case under sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 452 (house trespass) of the IPC has been registered.In the second case, Kapil Dev , head constable, posted at Mullana, said: “I am posted as the security agent at Mullana police station. On February 16 at 4.30pm, I came to know that one boy went to a shop near Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk in Mullana to purchase something and was assaulted by 7-8 unknown youths. They also threatened to kill him. The boy has been identified as Ajhar Ul Islam, a BSc student at MMU.”A case under sections 148 (rioting armed with deadly weapon), 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the IPC has been registered.Mullana SHO inspector Harbhajan Singh said: “Two separate cases related to the recent incidents in the MMU have been registered against unknown persons. We are working to identify the culprits and action will be taken as per the law.”Ambala deputy commissioner Sharandeep Kaur Brar told TOI: “The situation is peaceful in the area and on the university campus. After taking leave from the university authorities, nearly 45 students have left the MMU campus for a period of one week in order to meet their parents at home. The students have expressed satisfaction with the security arrangements by the district administration and they have not left the university due to any security concerns. Most of the students are still in the university and proper security arrangements have been made.”Barara sub-divisional magistrate, Girish Chawla, said: “The students left after hiring private cabs as they wanted to meet their parents. The parents of some of the students were waiting in Chandigarh. The students demanded security up to J&K which was not possible.”
