PANAJI: After the last pay-parking contract failed to instill discipline in motorists and bring in revenue to the civic body, the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has now decided to use its own workers to implement the pay-parking system in the state capital.“Our staff will collect pay-parking fees for two months on a trial basis. Depending on the number of vehicles parking in the 18 designated pay-parking spots, we will decide whether to revise the spots,” mayor Uday Madkaikar told TOI, adding that the suggestion came from the commissioner, which all the corporators agreed to.The intention is not so much to collect revenue as it is to instill parking discipline, he said. The corporation will hold a meeting with the traffic police next week to tackle the problem of casino vehicles parking haphazardly between Hotel Mandovi and Down the Road restaurant. “The problem in this area arises after 8pm. It is difficult for an ambulance or fire brigade pass through with cars parking on both sides of the road at night. We will force them to park their vehicles at the multi-level parking at Patto . If not we will take strict action This is my priority,” Madkaikar added. The corporation is also looking at freeing parking spaces in the capital occupied by tourist taxis. “There are cars parking in front of hotels,” he said citing an example of 18th June Road. We will meet with the drivers and request them to park opposite Bal Bhavan. The area has been cleared and they can use it for the time being. They can come to town to collect their passengers,” he said. The cash-starved corporation will give house tax defaulters an opportunity to pay arrears in installments. “The arrears are more than Rs 8 crore. We will recover this with interest from them. As the amount is huge we will give them the opportunity to pay in installments. This way at least some revenue will come in,” he said.
