GHAZIABAD: The police and the district administration will soon have advanced technology to aid monitoring of traffic offenders in the city. The Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) has floated a tender for the implementation of its ambitious Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS) project.Under the project, CCTV cameras will be installed at strategic locations across Ghaziabad. These cameras will be powered by optical character recognition technology to read the number plates of vehicles violating the traffic rules like speeding, red light jumping etc. The system will automatically generate challans that will be sent to the violators. The ITMS — which will be connected to a command system at Meerut trisection — will also provide real-time traffic advisory to motorists in case of snarls to ensure that any area with heavy traffic does not get any more vehicles for a required time. Instead, it will divert vehicles to lesser crowded routes for better flow, officials said.A similar system, known as Highway Traffic Management System (ITMS) is already operational on the 25-km Noida-Greater Noida expressway and partly functional on the Yamuna expressway . Under the ITMS project, 300 red light vehicle detection (RLVD) cameras and 110 pan-tilt zoom (PTZ) cameras will be installed across the city. Moreover, public address system will be set up at 82 spots. The project is to cost us Rs 60 crore,” VK Singh, OSD to GDA, told TOI.Three busy stretches in the city — Hindon Elevated Road, UP Gate and Atmaram Steel roundabout — will get the maximum number of speed violation cameras. “Traffic light violation and wrong-side driving are very common in the city and we will do our best to monitor traffic particularly on these three stretches,” he said.“The command system will come up at Meerut trisection soon. It will have 16 LED monitors to keep a real-time tab on traffic movement in the city,” the OSD said.“While we will spend Rs 50 crore, the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation is supposed to give its share of Rs 10 crore,” he added. The private agency selected for implementation of the project will also be tasked with the maintenance of the cameras, officials said. “”By this year, the ITMS will be introduced in the city,” said Singh.
