PUDUKOTTAI: A 36-year-old man was arrested on Friday for murdering a woman and staging it as an attack by a gang, near Aranthangi in Pudukottai district.The Karambakudi police arrested M Mohan, of Soorakadu village, for murdering S Mahalakshmi, 30, of the same area, among the eucalyptus plantation behind his house on Thursday night. Mahalakshmi was found murdered with severe head injury while Mohan was found lying on the ground bleeding with a head injury.Family members and relatives rushed him to the hospital for treatment, while Karambakudi police rushed to the spot and recovered Mahalakshmi’s body.After gaining consciousness, Mohan told the police that a five member gang attacked them when they were found in an intimate position.As the post-mortem report did not reveal any sign of sexual intercourse, there directed their suspicion on Mohan. On interrogation he revealed the truth.The police said that Mahalakshmi and Mohan were in love for more than 15 years. Mahalakshmi’s family opposed the realtionship over previous enmity, but she was firm on her decision to marry him. However, Mohan dragged it citing his sister’s marriage.On Thursday, the lovers met at their usual place and there was a heated argument between them. Mahalakshmi took a wooden log and clobbered him on his head. Since Mohan was drunk, he got infuriated and retaliated and beat her to death on the spot.The police said that Mohan brought a knife and chilli powder with him, with an intention to kill Mahalakshmi. Mohan was remanded in judicial custody.
