BENGALURU: The video of a seven-year-old girl who was shackled to a niche on a wall in Bengaluru went viral on Sunday. A Delhi-based activist who received the video alerted police.Probe revealed the girl’s mother, a domestic help , had used a rope to shackle the child and ensure she does not wander around.In the 11-second video, the girl’s right hand is seen tied with a rope to the niche to restrict her movements. Police found the video was shot near HAL road. They said the child, suffering from speech impairment and learning disabilities, would often run away from home, prompting her mother to tie her up.DCP (east) Rahul Kumar told TOI, “The mother works in multiple households and is not in a position to handle the child. We haven’t filed any case against the mother and handed over to the girl to the child welfare committee (CWC). The latter has contacted the directorate of welfare of disabled and senior citizens.”Sources said the girl’s father is a daily-wage labourer and both husband and wife have to work every day to make both ends meet.The woman said she was helpless as her child suffered from psychosocial disabilities. “This is not about filing a case against the mother but to show humanity, compassion and create awareness among parents. We are trying to help the family,” said a police officer.
