‘Saharanpur victims had gone to Haridwar, consumed liquor there’

Superintendent of Police (SP), Kushinagar, Rajeev Mishra said police arrested one Rajendra Jaiswal after he confessed to have supplied spurious liquor to victims. He denied involvement of Dudhnath in the incident and claimed one of the victims, Ram Vriksha, had sold spurious liquor to victims after purchasing it from the Bihar bootlegger, Rajendra Jaiswal. However, additional commissioner (excise) O P Arya said in Kushinagar hooch was being smuggled from bordering Bihar while in Saharanpur all victims had gone to Haridwar on Mauni Amavasiya and consumed liquor there. Another local resident, Sugriv, said his father Awadh Nishad also took ill after consuming liquor sold by Dudhnath and later died. At least, four others are undergoing treatment at a district hospital and they admitted buying liquor from a local vendor at a village fair on banks of the Gandak.

Though family members claimed illicit liquor was distilled and sold by a local resident, Dudhnath, under the brand name Crazy Romeo, police insist hooch was smuggled from Gopalganj in Bihar by one Rajendra Jaiswal, who was arrested on Friday.Saral Nishad, whose son Heera Lal, 35, died after consuming spurious liquor told TOI over phone that it’s well-known that accused Dudhnath has been manufacturing and selling illicit liquor for several years now. “He has machines for mixing methyl and ethyl at home,” he said. Another local resident, Sugriv, said his father Awadh Nishad also took ill after consuming liquor sold by Dudhnath and later died. “Dudhnath put out a liquor stall on ‘Mauni Amavasya’ on village outskirts on February 4 and 5 and all those who took ill or died had purchased bottles of Crazy Romeo from him,” he said.
