Agra: Agra police had a tough time controlling crowds that wanted to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who came to Agra’s Kothi Meena Bazar on Wednesday to hold a rally ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Several groups who sought to protest at, or disrupt the event, were restrained in time.Police detained activists of Samajwadi Chatra Sabha (SCS), who were planning to wave black flags at the convoy of PM Modi. Saman Adhikar Party workers organizing a meeting to oppose the PM’s rally were also taken into custody.Meanwhile, Pragatisheel Samajwadi Party men who burnt an effigy of the PM were also detained. While some of the NSUI (National students union of India) members, who had raised anti-Modi slogans at different parts of the city on Monday night, were taken into custody, others were put on house arrest by police on Wednesday morning.A large number of Congress workers, led by city president Haji Abrar and senior leader Shabbir Abbas, waved black flags to protest the PM’s visit. Later, Abrar, along with several other congress leaders, were taken into custody.Abbas said, “We are opposing Modi’s visit as he has not kept the promises he made before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. We will not allow him to mislead voters once again.”Farmer leader Shyam Singh Chahar and Somveer Yadav, who had said they would oppose the PM’s rally, were also confined to their houses since Wednesday morning. Shyam Singh said, “Police came to my home in the morning and didn’t allow me to go out till 5 PM. We were not allowed to mark our protest in a democratic manner. The central government has not taken any concrete action to address the issues of farmers.During the PM’s visit, scores of Agra district court lawyers were detained from Bhagwan Talkies roundabout, as they staged a protest against the Modi and Yogi governments for failing to create an Agra bench of the UP High Court.
