AGARTALA: Tripura royal scion Pradyot Debbarman was appointed president of the state unit of Congress on Monday night, replacing Birajit Sinha. The move is seen as part of a larger overhaul in the run-up to the Lok Sabha election."Thank you @RahulGandhi ! I hope to ensure that an era of clean and honest politics is brought about in Tripura. To all my critics and friends alike i will remain the same pradyot," Deb tweeted after the announcement.Tripura Congress leaders said the change of guard was long overdue. In the assembly election exactly a year ago, Congress had contested 58 seats but did not win any - a major decline in political fortunes since the time it was the main opposition in the assembly. Some leaders within the party attributed this to a crisis of leadership and factional feuds, which eventually led to the exit of leaders, many of whom became ministers - health minister Sudip Roy Barman , education minister Ratan Lal Nath, agriculture minister Pranajit Singharoy, sports and food minister Manoj Kanti Deb and deputy speaker Biswabandhu Sen, among others. As the state's last royal, considered to wield influence over the indigenous voter base, Pradyot was offered a BJP ticket for the last assembly ticket. He rejected BJP's overtures. Even recently, there were reports of BJP offering him the East Tripura tribal-reserved Lok Sabha seat, which he reportedly turned down again. In recent times, Pradyot has become the face of the protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, championing the cause of the indigenous population. Sources within Congress said Pradyot has already started work on the revival of the party, reaching out to important tribal leaders like Bijoy Kumar Hrangkhwal and Animesh Debbarma to bring them into the party's fold. "But he is not too keen on contesting the Lok Sabha election himself," a party leader said.
